Choose the research question
A stock signal study examines a rule on a defined universe. An ETF allocation study examines selection and rebalance rules. These are different experiments: choose one question before combining signals, ranking and allocation.
Prepare comparable observations
Record identifiers, available history, currency and corporate-action treatment. For funds, document inception dates and distribution conventions. Use an eligible universe appropriate to each historical date rather than applying today’s list retrospectively.
Make market assumptions explicit
For the intended venue, verify the applicable calendar, lot sizes, trading restrictions, fees and order behavior with official exchange or broker documents. This guide intentionally supplies no universal rule for every jurisdiction; a study must record the rules and dates actually used.
Use tools within their scope
Use the transaction-cost calculator for a simplified complete buy/sell example and the drawdown calculator for a consistent positive equity sequence. The position-size tool is limited to an unlevered long cash-asset example with whole units; it does not model venue-specific lot constraints.
Report the decision basis
Keep the benchmark, date range, costs, turnover and drawdown together. Record whether the result depends on one period or parameter. This page is a study design, not a list of securities or an allocation recommendation.
Start the practical task
Use the research studio to document rules or inspect a suitable equity series. Review the input assumptions and export your work before leaving.
